Sync.in is a web based word processor for people to collaborate in real-time. When multiple people edit the same document simultaneously, any changes are instantly reflected on everyone's screen. The result is a new and productive way to collaborate with text documents, useful for meeting notes, brainstorming, project planning, training, and more.

Once you've started your document it is assigned a unique url that you can share with anyone you want to collaborate with. Sync.in gives each person his or her own text color so that you can keep track of who wrote what.

The librarians at CSB/SJU developed Learning Goals that we hope all students will have achieved when the graduate, and also take with them into their careers, graduate school or wherever life leads them. If you have any questions, please contact Sarah Gewirtz at sgewirtz@csbsju.edu.

Learning Goals for the Libraries

1. Know: Students will be able to determine the nature and extent of the information needed to analyze a given topic, produce an academic paper or other work, or create a performance. The student must be able to effectively address these questions:

What is it I want to know?
What kind of information do I need?
How much information do I need?

2. Access: Students will be able to access needed information effectively and efficiently, using resources and strategies appropriate to their need and discipline. The student must be able to effectively address these questions:

What is the best way to gather this information?
Am I using the best terms for this search?
Which search system or other resource will help me retrieve this information?

3. Evaluate: Students will be able to evaluate information and its sources critically and analytically, and incorporate selected information into his or her knowledge base and value system. The student must be able to effectively address these questions:

Is this a credible source of information?
Is there another interpretation or point of view?
How does this new information change what I know?

4. Use: Students, as individuals or as members of a group, will be able to use information effectively to create a specific academic paper, performance, or other work. The student must be able to effectively address these questions:

Do I integrate new and prior information into my academic paper, performance, or other work?
Am I able to reflect on my research/development process to incorporate alternate strategies?
Do I present my academic paper, performance or other work in an appropriate manner?

5. Ethical/Legal: Students will be able to articulate the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information and access and use information ethically and legally. The student must be able to effectively address these questions:

Do I follow established intellectual property laws and policies?
Are there university policies about information gathering, use or reproduction and dissemination?
Do I appropriately cite materials I use in my work, and follow a citation style appropriate for my discipline?

As a companion to Professor Cindy Malone’s Thursday Forum lecture, the library is sponsoring an exhibit which showcases the major aspects of her presentation. Prof. Malone has taken the 18th century novel Tristram Shandy by Laurence Sterne and created an artists’ book that is designed to show how strikingly modern this text is. In addition, she has used the form of the book (and the elements of book arts) to enhance and build on the original book. Come to the library and see the one-of-a-kind, handmade artists’ book, additional original material and the unfolding of the book in a contemporary context.

Instead of scribbling down your thoughts on a piece of scratch paper and having to bring it with you, you can now have your notes always with you as long as you have access to the web. Evernote can capture and save your notes, a webpage, photos or a screenshot; index anything you’ve captured or saved; and allows you to search by keyword, title or tag. It also offers creative ways to use their service.

Reading on the web can sometimes be challenging. Text blocks are broken up, advertisements are flashing relentlessly, type can be tiny. What is a person to do to make reading on a web page more pleasant? Enter Readability, a nifty utility that removes the clutter around what you're reading. Readability works with most major modern browsers and has been tested on many news sites and blogs. It isn't 100% effective, but works surprisingly well.

So you've signed up for Twitter and now the tweets are coming in fast and furious, people are mentioning you, you're getting direct messages, people are retweeting you, and maybe you even decided to have multiple accounts, a personal one and one professionally or for your business. Are you overwhelmed with how to follow it all? We have just the tool for you! TweetDeck is free software you can download that will connect you to your Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn accounts, all in one location. You can organize things from those accounts in different columns and you can even update your statuses in those accounts from TweetDeck.

Meet the Librarians - Diana Symons!

Meet Diana Symons, the Social Sciences Librarian. She is the liaison librarian to the Asian Studies, Exercise Science and Sport Studies, Latino/Latin American Studies, Military Science, Peace Studies, Psychology, and Sociology departments.

We asked her a few questions, and this is what she shared!

1) What was your favorite food when you were a child? Waffles! I still love any type of breakfast food.

2) What is one of your favorite quotes? The really important kind of freedom involves attention, and awareness, and discipline, and effort, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them, over and over, in myriad petty little unsexy ways, every day. That is real freedom. –David Foster Wallace

3) What is your favorite form of exercise? Yoga and running. I also love to snowshoe and canoe (see me flexing my guns in the BWCA?), so CSB/SJU is a good fit for me.

4) If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I’d like to be a better cook. My vegetarian diet frequently devolves into eating cereal for dinner – like I said, I love breakfast food, but still….

5) If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do? Pay off my student loans! Then I’d have a party, and buy some plane tickets to exotic and remote destinations. And after that, I’d be responsible and start investing and donating to charities.

6) If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose? Pippi Longstocking. Clemens Juvenile Collection PZ7 .L6585 P56.

7) What do you want to be when you grow up? A brave and strong and resilient and caring and thoughtful woman.

8) When was the last time you were nervous? Probably my last library instruction session – I still get a little nervous and over-prepare any time I have to speak in public.

9) At what age did you become an adult? Um, I’m pushing 30 and I’m still waiting.

Meet the Librarians - Sarah Gewirtz!

Meet Sarah Gewirtz, the Information Literacy Librarian. She is the liaison librarian to the Education and Political Science departments. We asked her a few questions, and this is what she shared!

1) What was your favorite food when you were a child?
Kraft macaroni and cheese and frozen fish sticks. While I still like macaroni and cheese, my taste buds have matured and they only prefer homemade now.

2) What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
Pretty much all of them but cleaning the bathroom and taking care of the kitty litter are probably the top two.

3) What is your favorite form of exercise?
When I had time I enjoyed jogging...I'm sorta still doing that by chasing my son around!

4) If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
I do not know. I know there have been times I've said, "I wish I could that" but couldn't tell you what "that" is.

5) If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?
Get a lawyer. Then pay off bills. Then a vacation for all my family.

6) What do you want to be when you grow up?
I hope after making my millions as a librarians (ha!), that I could open a bakery on the west coast (Washington or Oregon State).

7) What would you name the autobiography of your life?
"My Life is a Aaron Spelling Soap Opera". I'm pretty sure I could relate some aspect of my life to one of his many evening soap operas.

8) What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done? What was the last experience that made you a stronger person?
Everything that has been hard for me has made me a stronger person. Moving, by myself, to South Carolina (and then Minnesota); working full-time while attending graduate school full-time; being a single parent are all examples of things that have been hard yet made me a stronger person.

9) When was the last time you were nervous?
At a recent conference - I had to present and while I was prepared it still makes me nervous.

10) At what age did you become an adult?
I don't think that will ever happen.

The Library is dedicated to helping the students of the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University to become lifelong learners. Alcuin and Clemens Library would like to recognize faculty members who have notably contributed to promoting information literacy within the current academic year with an annual Information Literacy Faculty Award. Any member of the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University faculty is eligible. Nominations will be accepted from self-nominators, other faculty members, librarians, and students.

The winner of the award will receive:
• Award recipient's name noted in a book, purchased on their behalf for inclusion in the Library collection
• An individual plaque of recognition
• $100 towards research expenses
• Award recipient announced at the Academic Affairs Awards and Recognition Ceremony

Meet the Librarians - Jim Parsons!

Meet Jim Parsons, the Associate Director for Public Services. He is the liaison librarian to the Chemistry, Nursing, and Nutrition departments. We asked him a few questions, and this is what he shared!

1) What was your favorite food when you were a child?
Hmmm – I was a macaroni and cheese guy when I was quite young, which is really quite boring. My mom’s oatmeal cookies were a staple through my teen years. Strange snack favorite was Miracle Whip on saltine crackers. Yum!

2) What is one of your favorite quotes?
“A ship in port is safe, but that is not what ships are for. Sail out to sea and do new things.” --Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper

3) What chore do you absolutely hate doing?
Taking out the garbage, during the cold winter months.

4) What is your favorite form of exercise?
Bike riding – I get out as often as I can, weather permitting.

5) If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would it be?
Don’t know. Every age I’ve been so far has been a lot of fun!

6) If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?
I suppose I’d have to tell my wife…

7) If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose?
I’ve always thought Gandalf was a pretty cool character.

8) What do you want to be when you grow up?
Not sure I will ever grow up. Do I have to?

9) What would you name the autobiography of your life?
“Unfinished” – although I bet that title is already spoken for.

10) What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
Having grown up in the Detroit area in the 60’s and 70’s, I would include a lot of Motown.

11) At what age did you become an adult?
Not entirely sure that I have – is that a problem?

Dropbox is a terrific solution to accessing your files on multiple computers, your mobile phone, and online anytime. It’s as simple and straightforward to use as dragging and dropping them into your Dropbox.

According to Word Spy, this site is “devoted to lexpionage, the sleuthing of new words and phrases.” Terms that appear on the page have already begun to crop up in magazines, newspapers, websites and other recorders of current events. The words are a great insight into contemporary pre-occupations and offer useful jumping off points for discussions about current events, slang and how language evolves for our needs. Some recent entries, such as recession chic, carborexia and trashout, reflect how writers are discussing the nation’s economic troubles.

Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read! Each library has on display books that have been banned or challenged for one reason or another.

What's the difference? A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials. Challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, thereby restricting the access of others.

Google Sky Map is an app built for both the iPhone and the Droid. With Google Sky Map you can discover and browse the night sky just by pointing your phone to space (even if you're inside!).

The four main features of this app are:

Search: Find planets, stars, and constellations guided by your phone.

Motion detection: Sky Map uses your phone’s GPS, accelerometer, and compass to create a window in the sky that moves with your hand.

Browse: Explore the brightest naked-eye stars, planets, sun and moon, constellation lines, horizon, cardinal points, and Messier Objects.

Navigate: Use automatic mode to let Sky Map adjust the map for you or switch to a manual mode that allows the map to be dragged with a finger.

MN Women's Legislative Timeline

Can you name the first four women to serve in the Minnesota Legislature?
Or, who was the first African American woman to serve in the Minnesota
Legislature? Did you know that in 1977, Minnesota became the first state to
give financial support to battered women's shelters? Minnesota Legislative
Reference Library in conjunction with the Office on the Economic Status of
Women has just unveiled a Legislative History Timeline that identifies key
laws passed for women since suffrage in 1920. While it is not a comprehensive
list of women’s legislation it does highlight key milestones in areas such as
economics, social issues, and employment.

Seems that Internet Explorer 9 users are unable to see search results in Web of Science unless running in "compatibility view."

There is a quick fix for this, and it involves clicking on “Tools” and then checking “Compatibility View”.

Note that you also might not see the Tools menu, which appears to have been disabled by default on campus computers. To enable this, right-click on the very top of your IE browser window and make sure “Menu bar” is enabled.

Trial: Novelist K-8

We recently began a trial to the database Novelist K-8. A description from the website is as follows:

“School media specialists, teachers and parents interested in helping kids locate age-appropriate books in the library will appreciate the features and depth of content contained within NoveList K-8 Plus. Designed especially for elementary and middle school students, NoveList K-8 Plus is an online database with fiction and nonfiction titles chosen specifically to support the school curriculum as well as the pleasure reading needs of students. Just type in an author, title or key words in the Find box, or browse our database by age group, and you'll access our rich collection of titles, BookTalks, Recommended Reads book lists and more. Our book jacket images, annotations and first chapter excerpts, as well as tools like Lexile scores and popularity ratings, help you to quickly find that just-right book.”

Fax Apps!

The library does not have fax machines available for the public to use, but there are apps available if you need to fax something!

First, scan in your document. You can do this with the scanners located in either Alcuin or Clemens Library. There are step-by-step instructions on how to scan your document attached to the scanner. If you need help, please do not hesitate to ask for a Librarian at the circulation desk.

Once your documents are scanned, navigate to one of these web apps:

Hellofax is a web-based service that allows you to send faxes and fill out and sign documents from your internet browser. New users are given five pages of faxing for free, and after that it costs $1.99 per fax (up to 10 pages, at $0.20/page after that). If you're a heavy duty faxer, you can also sign up for monthly plans which give you varying amounts of faxes each month.

If you're looking for a cheaper alternative, there is FaxZero which will allow you to send a maximum of two free faxes of three pages each a day for free! There is a catch, though. FaxZero will append a cover page with an advertisement on each fax. A $1.99 per fax payment through PayPal, though, will remove the advertisement and grant you up to fifteen pages per fax.

Tomorrow: Book Lovers Night - Peter Geye!

Book Lover's Night will feature Peter Geye, author of "Safe from the Sea". A heartfelt novel in which a son returns home to reconnect with his estranged and dying father thirty-five years after the father’s tragic wreck in an ore boat on the Great Lakes of northern Minnesota.

Doors open at 6pm with Peter Geye talking at 7:00pm. The event will be held at O’Connel’s Coffee House, Haehn Campus Center (CSB). It is free and open to the public!

Avoid library fines by returning all library items before leaving for the summer! All library books for undergraduate and grad students are due on Friday, May 13th. Replacement cost will be billed for any material not returned.

Books can also be returned to the Great Hall Information Desk starting Friday, May 13th.

If you would like to have your due dates extended into the summer just ask at the Circulation desks or give us a call. You will be able to renew starting on May 12th. Need help renewing:

RefWorks migration to EasyBib/EndNote

CSB/SJU has had a subscription to RefWorks for several years. During this time there have been a proliferation of other software packages, many of them free, which are used to create bibliographies. We have decided to cancel our RefWorks subscription and offer instead two alternatives: EndNote and EasyBib. They are both available now, and RefWorks will continue to be available through June 30th.

You can migrate your references from RefWorks to either EndNote or EasyBib. Here are the instructions. See a librarian if you need additional help.

2011 has been called by some the year of the e-book. Although e-books have been around for some time now in various shapes and forms, they seem to be reaching a critical point of our collective consciousness since the release of several new e-reader devices and tablet computers. The library is wanting to learn more about how to supply e-books to meet the demand and needs of a changing environment.

One supplier of e-books is ebrary, and we have a 30-day trial (through May 14) to their e-book system.
