OED turns 80

2008 marks the 80th anniversary of publication of the Oxford English Dictionary, the premier lexicography of the English language. Work on the OED began in 1857 and took 70 years to complete before the first edition was published in 1928. That first edition took up ten hefty volumes. It featured the work of scores of scholars, including J.R.R. Tolkein who worked on words in the "W" volume in 1919 and 1920. The second edition, published in 1989, required twenty volumes. We have a set in Clemens Library. Now the OED is updated continuously online. Author Simon Winchester told the story of the making of the OED in his wonderful book The Professor and the Madman, available in Alcuin.
