News from the Library Director: READ

You've seen READ posters from the Libraries posted around the Saint Ben's and Saint John's campuses. From presidents and professors to chefs and bus drivers and students of every discipline, everyone reads. Reading is essential not only to completing coursework and studying for exams, but for personal enrichment and informed decision-making of all kinds. As you finish the semester and move into summer activities, I encourage you to challenge yourself with reading a little more, and a little more broadly than last year. Sure, I want you to enjoy a thriller on the beach or a mystery novel on the airplane. But try something outside your usual choices as well -- maybe a book about the environment (I recommend Field Notes from a Catastrophe by Elizabeth Kolbert); or a history book (how about Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin); or even some recollections of the Minneapolis music scene (Jim Walsh's The Replacements: All Over But the Shouting). Just ask if you'd like more recommendations. The Libraries extend book loans over the whole summer, so stop by and grab a few titles to tuck in your suitcase. And send us a picture -- we'd love to see photos of our readers in action. Happy Summer Reading!
