Librarian's Choice: Nineteen Minutes

I just finished Jodi Picoult's newest book, Nineteen Minutes. It is about a school shooting. The main character, Peter, had been bullied since before kindergarten. The school and his parents did nothing to make it stop. His parents would tell him to stick up for himself or punish him when he didn't. Peter was an outcast; someone that didn't fit in. He snapped and killed many of the students who were picking on him in the short span of nineteen minutes. Ms. Picoult's writing style in many of her books is to go back and forth between the present and the past. The reader will find out a lot about Peter, and his one-time best friend Josie Cormier (another main character in the book that also struggles but not with being unpopular but staying popular).

While reading this book I kept thinking something like this could happen anywhere. You just don't know. It is an emotional book. You can't walk away without thinking about the characters. At times you sympathize for Peter and all the terrible things that happened to him, and other times you sympathize with those who have died. Did the popular kids really deserve to die? And you get angry with the people who didn't do a thing to stop it from happening. As I said it was an emotional book that really will keep you thinking.

To learn more about the book, check out Ms. Picoult's website:
