Earth Day, April 22, 2007

"Earth Day was first observed in Spring of 1970. An estimated 20 million people nationwide attended festivities out of which came the largest grassroots environmental movement in U.S. history, and the impetus for national legislation like the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts. By the twentieth anniversary of that event, April 22, 1990, more than 200 million people in 141 countries participated in Earth Day celebrations." Local Events:

St. Cloud State University is sponsoring the Earth Day Clean-up an event to help clean up the campus and surrounding areas.
St. Cloud is sponsoring the Earth Day Half Marathon.

Visit Reduce.org. This site provides suggestions for reducing personal production of waste materials. "When you avoid making garbage in the first place, you don't have to worry about disposing of waste or recycling it later. Changing your habits is the key." Topics include office paper, composting, purchasing decisions, junk mail, transportation, holiday activities, and more. From the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

Tree City USA

"The Tree City USA program, sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, provides direction, technical assistance, public attention, and national recognition for urban and community forestry programs in thousands of towns and cities that more than 93 million Americans call home." The site features a list of participating cities and details about how a city can become a Tree City.

Global Integrity Report

This organization provides "information on corruption and governance" for countries around the world. The site features the "Global Integrity Report," a "collection of original, in-depth national assessments combining journalistic reporting with 292 'Integrity Indicators' analyzing openness, governance, and anti-corruption mechanisms for a diverse collection of countries." Also includes individual country reports, links to news, and related material.

We have a trial from April 2 - 30 of the Associated Press Image database:

Associated Press Images Database is a research database of every news event covered by the Associated Press for the last 150 years. AP Images contains over 3 million news photographs from the 1840's through today, with more than 3,000 photos being added on a daily basis. Additionally, users can search through over 50,000 graphics, including maps, timelines, logos and graphs. Subscribers have unlimited access to this unique resource 24/7 from their institution as well as remote locations. All content from AP Images may be downloaded and used for educational purposes with a subscription; however, trial accounts do not have download capability.
